Developmental Resilience: An Approach to Extended Education during a Global Youth Mental Health Crisis

Date: March 3rd, 2025
Time: 7:30 – 9:00 AM ET
Location: Online

In this session, Gil Noam will explore how extended education programs can proactively foster strengths and assets in individuals, families, and communities. In the process extended education as a field can help address post-COVID isolation, depression, suicidality and more. He will discuss the concept of "going upstream" to manage adversity and trauma, highlighting the role of mentoring relationships, engaged learning, and peer group activities in promoting positive mental health. This approach is the most humane and cost-effective as it does not wait for suffering to become chronic or even life-threatening. In no country are there enough trained clinicians who can handle the number of psychological and psychiatric problems that young people and the adults that surround them encounter.

By adopting the approach, Noam and his team call Developmental Resilience where adversity can lead to strength rather than illness, extended education programs not only enhance youth development but also align with public health objectives, opening avenues for much-needed funding from both educational and health sectors.

On every continent there are innovative approaches to policy, research and practice to make the most of non-school hours. In 2023 we founded GELYDA to create the link between scholarship, new practices and programming as well as creating national and international systems. After a very successful virtual inaugural symposium in May 2024 we are now going to host a hybrid conference in Reykjavik Iceland in June 2025, gathering in person and for those who are not able to join, offering online components to promote participation for all.
